Posted in :

Smart Farmer

On average, farmers in Kenya harvest 20–35 bags of maize (90kg each) per acre under normal practices. With modern methods, yields can go up to 40 bags per acre.

Steps to Achieve High Maize Yields

  • Land Preparation – Plough 2–3 times, harrow to fine tilth
  • Seed Selection – Choose hybrid seeds like H614, DK8031, or Pwani Hybrids.
  • Planting – Spacing of 75 cm x 25 cm; 1 seed per hole.
  • Fertilizer Application – Use DAP at planting, then CAN/Urea at topdressing.
  • Weed Control – Weed 2–3 times before tasseling.
  • Pest & Disease Management – Control Fall Armyworm and Maize Streak Virus.
  • Harvesting – Harvest when husks dry, store properly to reduce losses.

Target: With proper care, you can get 35–40 bags per acre.
