What’s an Adult Coloring Book?

During the time of writing this article (August 2015), one fourth of Amazon’s top twenty best-selling books are coloring in gossip columns. So what is a grown-up coloring book, and how one thing these are currently outselling top fiction authors with new releases for example E.L. James and Paula Hawkins?


Adult coloring books are, plain and simply, coloring in gossip columns for older people. Like children’s coloring books, these are packed with outline illustrations built to be filled in with colored pencils, markers, crayons, or whatever other media you wish to use.

What’s in an adult coloring in book?

The main difference between adults’ and kids’ color books could be that the matured versions generally feature less juvenile images and designs. As an alternative to superheroes, barnyard animals, and television characters, adult coloring in gossip columns are more often full of:

aspects of natural world, for example trees, flowers, leaves, gardens, animals and insects;
geometric designs;
psychedelic patterns;
repetitive ‘wallpaper’ type patterns;
cities and buildings;
anatomical drawings;
goddesses, angels, and mermaids;

celtic designs.
There are also many ‘theme’ specific books available, featuring diverse subjects for example cars, steampunk designs, and Art Nouveau patterns.

Are they all so popular?

A Scottish illustrator named Johanna Basford published a jewish adult coloring books called Secret Garden in 2013, featuring pages of beautifully hand-illustrated ink drawings. The newest York Times reported in March that a Korean pop star named Kim Ki-bum posted a photograph on Instagram of your ‘delicately colored-in floral pattern’ from Secret Garden. Back then, Ki-bum were built with a massive 1.8 million Instagram followers. The post went viral and helped to ignite the craze.

The increase in rise in popularity of the books reportedly has much to do with adult relaxation and stress release. Many adults who use the books claim that they find the repetitive, low-stress nature of coloring into be soothing, relaxing, and a way of de-stressing away from the pressures of life and work.

Among the other advantages of adult coloring in gossip columns, they also claim that they can enjoy recapturing the nostalgia of childhood by participating in an activity usually reserved for children. It will require people returning to an easier time, and may even be a means for fogeys for connecting and bond with their children to take a seat down to color along with them. Obviously, many parents have already been happily coloring in kids’ books for years, the good news is they have got choices which aren’t restricted to Dora the Explorer or SpongeBob SquarePants.

In summary, coloring for adults is apparently an evergrowing past-time that allows adults to chill and unplug in the stress in their lives, by participating in a hands-on activity that needs minimal commitment and maximum nostalgia.
