I was thinking about writing this post on band promotion since i have often heard new bands and struggling musicians wishing they received more paying gigs. Receiving a paying gig is nice, I mean… you would spend lots of time, energy and in many cases funds on getting the act together.. rehearsing, traveling to rehearsals and gigs (gas can be a pain in case you travel by car), buying your gear, etc. But earning money gigs for new acts can be extremely difficult.
As i believe it is great to have paid, I don’t mean to express think about a band like a business. Some tips i am saying is, it would be practical to at least have your costs covered.
Of course, that would depend on you and your reasons why you’re in a band to start with.
Some bands want to play; enjoy playing; believe playing and having their music out there is the best compensation there exists… as well as the return of the purchase of effort, time and money is that possiblity to get out of bed there and PLAY. Additionally, there are individuals that work towards a long-term goal like building their particular following and having their music across for many years.
The reasons why put it into practice, basically sums it up.
But, in case you desired to get paying gigs, here are some actions.
1. Work with Your product or service
Now and then I locate client who struggles with promoting their service or product, and put in a number of effort simply to get minimal results. The reason is, they haven’t been able to accurately develop, define and refine their product, which is the reason aggressively promoting something mediocre will always yield mediocre results.
So what exactly is your product? This rock band, and your music. The important thing real question is how would you set yourself in addition to the rest. What exactly is it you accomplish that is exclusive, or what is it that can be done better than everyone else?
“What are you wanting individuals to remember and As if you for?”
2. Define Your Music/Repertoire
Repertoire defines what type of band you’re. It also defines who your audience is. In my opinion writing and recording original material is great because insurance agencies your individual music you develop an asset that others would not have. It’s that final sum of a collaborative creative effort that music news BUT, does not guarantee success, since for the band to get successfully recognized for your music, you’ll first must attract an audience which gets to know and be thankful.
On the same note, as being a cover band does not necessarily mean you cannot get paying gigs. There are many of cover bands which get paid well for small bar gigs as well as major events.
What it really depends upon will be the novelty of the band, and your draw. Novelty is that something about yourself that folks should come see; and your draw will be the size everyone else you are able to gather for your gigs.
3. Market Yourself
You would need to sell yourself to individuals who you suspect would appreciate your band as well as what you have to offer. There are basically 2 types of people you wish to target; there are those who you need going to your gigs and appreciating your music, as well as the those who are capable of hire you for gigs.
This may be the classic “the chicken or the egg scenario”, in places you actually expand your audience and obtain more exposure when you’re playing more gigs, but to obtain more gigs you’ve got to have invited or hired by people who’ve support for making gigs happen.
However it need not be complicated. You need to simply do both as well.
Networking is essential. The more people you can meet, the harder contacts you establish, the closer you can your goal.
4. Management / Representation
You need a supervisor. A professional figure individual preference trust and depend on to dedicate yourself to nothing more than the success and well-being of the band.
A manager needs to be a tenacious businessman. He’s a negotiator, understands marketing, and more importantly he believes inside the product he could be entrusted with. His main goal would be to sustain and develop further the merchandise he manages.
Creating a manager may have several benefits, then one of the things that I see managers doing that bands that manage themselves cannot, is be objective. The manager sees a thing that individual members in the band usually do not see, this is also true when some individuals the band develop egos that cloud their judgment. Members often get tunnel vision and may not respond well with people’s opinions that may not be flattering, a supervisor knows if criticisms are valid and take these not emotionally but objectively.
A manager is both associated with the gang and outsider; a part as he works together the gang to achieve cause real progress. He’s an outsider who is able to make rational decisions and in many cases be critical of the group whether or not this fails to get results what their audience expects.
Musicians can sometimes be essentially the most stubborn of men and women, as well as the least receptive to criticism, plus a trusted opinion from a specialist figure might help the band work to better the merchandise. Understand that the manager is especially a businessman, and the man runs the band because it’s “profitable”… the simpler to promote a band, the harder money it can make, the harder money the manager makes too.
Managers should also be very aggressive and chronic, a friend of mine (a supervisor for a huge act) once said an account about how precisely she approached bar after bar simply to get denied every time and was given a variety of reasons and excuses. She never lost the battle, and didn’t give up on her band… today that band can be a major recording artist… and to remain big for quite a while now.
