‘What is legionella bacteria as well as am I at risk?’

Legionella germs is microscopic and can be found in streams, rivers, reservoirs and waters, usually in minimal numbers, where that they don’t cause any difficulties. The difficulty comes when these tiny microorganisms get trapped within your water system as well as multiply, potentially ultimately causing Legionnaires’ Disease.

According to the Government, there were 503 cases of Legionnaires’ Ailment in the UK in 2019. It’s a significant illness which can be deadly – symptoms to be aware of include fever, headaches, cough and breathlessness.

While legionella bacteria might cause problems anywhere in the right conditions, several areas such as areas where water can be stored or recirculated, where the water temperature is between 20-45°C or where rust, sludge, scale as well as organic matters are present, are considered to be with much higher risk.

People who are more susceptible to infection, including the elderly and people with weakened immunity processes, need to be especially watchful.
