Health and Vaccinations

Travelers to Tajikistan do not need to be vaccinated, however, they should be vaccinated in Typhoid and Tetanus and Polio, Hepatitis A and Polio. Malaria is also able to be found in Tajikistan therefore it’s a good idea to consult your physician for advice on immunisations.

Cultural Sensitivity

While on our trips, you will often meet local people all with unique traditions and customs. You are asked to show respect and consideration towards the local population. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able advise you accordingly.

First, it is crucial to be aware that Central Asia has a more open-minded approach towards Islam than its neighbours in Pakistan and Afghanistan. However, it should also be kept in mind that this is technically an Muslim region and caution is recommended in certain places. Both women and men can wear shorts or T-shirts in urban areas, they should not be wearing T-shirts or sleeves that are long. But, those who visit active mosques should wear trousers that are below the knees and wear tops which cover shoulders. Also, a headscarf is advised for females. While on this tour, we’ll be travelling in quite remote areas which are rarely frequented by tourists. The locals tend to dress modestly, so it is likely that you’ll be more comfortable in conservative clothing.

Language and Religion

Tajikistan’s official language is Tajik. Russian is still widely used in business and communications.

Most people follow Sunni Islam. A small number of people are followers of Russian Orthodox, Catholicism and Buddhism.

Food and drinks

This tour focuses mainly on soups and meats. In the more remote and higher altitude places vegetables can be difficult to find. However, there are plenty of dried fruits and nuts that you can taste.

For alcohol, the choice is generally limited to vodka and beer, so those looking for something different – Scotch or Gin for instance – needs to purchase it duty free and take it home. Mixer drinks, such as tonic water, can be extremely difficult to locate, however.
