I thought about scripting this post on band promotion since i commonly hear new bands and struggling musicians wishing they were given more paying gigs. Finding a paying gig is nice, I mean… spent considerable time, energy and also cash on getting the act together.. rehearsing, touring rehearsals and gigs (gas can be a pain should you travel by car), buying your gear, etc. But earning money gigs for brand new acts can be be extremely difficult.
When i realize its great to obtain paid, I would not mean to convey you should consider a band like a business. What I am saying is, it could be practical to no less than have your costs covered.
Needless to say, that could rely on both you and your reasons why you’re in a band to begin with.
Some bands wish to play; love to play; feel that playing and achieving their music on the market is the better compensation there is certainly… and the return of these acquisition of effort, time and expense is possiblity to wake up there and PLAY. There’s also others who work towards a long-term goal like building their own following and achieving their music across to them.
The reasons why it’s, pretty much sums it down.
But, should you wanted to get paying gigs, here are some steps you can take.
1. Work with Your products or services
Now and then I discover a client who struggles with promoting their product or service, and hang in a number of effort only to get minimal results. The primary reason is, they have not managed to accurately develop, define and refine their product, which is the reason aggressively promoting something mediocre will invariably yield mediocre results.
So what is your products or services? The group, and your music. The true secret real how do you set yourself aside from the rest. What exactly is it you do that differs from the others, or what exactly is it that can be done superior to everyone else?
“What would you like people to remember and LIKE you for?”
2. Define Your Music/Repertoire
Repertoire defines what type of band you are. It also defines who your audience is. I believe writing and recording original materials are great because by having your individual music you develop a good point that others don’t have. It can be that final quantity of a collaborative creative effort that music news BUT, does not guarantee success, since to your band to get successfully recognized for your music, you would first need to attract a crowd that gets to know and be thankful.
About the same note, being a cover band does not always mean you can not get paying gigs. There are a lot of cover bands which will get paid well for small bar gigs as well as major events.
What it relies on will be the novelty of the band, and your draw. Novelty is something about you that people would want to come see; and your draw will be the size the crowd you are able to gather your gigs.
3. Market Yourself
You need to sell yourself to people that you think would appreciate your band along with what you are offering. There are basically two types of people you want to market to; you’ll find individuals who you need arriving at your gigs and appreciating your music, and the those people who are in a position to hire you for gigs.
This could actually be the classic “the chicken or even the egg scenario”, where you actually grow your audience and get more exposure by being playing more gigs, but to get additional gigs you have to obtain invited or hired by individuals that have aid to make gigs happen.
Nonetheless it needn’t be complicated. You just have to do both concurrently.
Networking is the vital thing. The harder people you get to meet, the harder contacts you identify, the closer you get to your goals.
4. Management / Representation
You need a supervisor. A specialist figure whom you trust and trust to dedicate yourself to nothing more than the success and well-being of the band.
A supervisor needs to be a tenacious businessman. He’s a negotiator, understands marketing, and more importantly he believes from the product he is entrusted with. His primary goal is always to sustain and develop further the product or service he manages.
Creating a manager will surely have several advantages, then one of the things I see managers being able to do that bands that manage themselves cannot, is be objective. The manager sees a thing that individual members inside a band do not see, this is especially valid when some people in this rock band develop egos that cloud their judgment. Members have a tendency to get tunnel vision and may not respond well along with other people’s opinions that will not be flattering, a supervisor knows if criticisms are valid and take these not emotionally but objectively.
A supervisor is both a member of the group and outsider; a member as they works together the group to achieve their dreams. He’s an outsider who is able to make rational decisions and also be critical of the group if it fails to deliver what their audience expects.
Musicians can often be the most stubborn of folks, and the least receptive to criticism, as well as a trusted opinion from an expert figure can help this rock band make an effort to better the product or service. Remember that the manager is above all a businessman, anf the husband runs this rock band which is “profitable”… the easier to showcase a band, the harder money commemorate, the harder money the manager makes as well.
Managers should be very aggressive and persistent, a buddy of mine (a supervisor for the huge act) once explained a narrative regarding how she approached bar after bar only to get denied each and every time and it was given a number of reasons and excuses. She never threw in the towel, and didn’t stop trying her band… today that band can be a major recording artist… and to remain big for some time now.
